<image:title>Museum Blog - Saints and Symbols - Crucifix/Crucifijo</image:title>
<image:caption>Symbols: Sun & moon, skull & cross bones, grapes, INRI Why those symbols? The sun and the moon symbolize the eclipse during the crucifixion. The skull and cross bones near the base of the cross refer to Golgotha, “the place of the skull,” the location where Christ was crucified. The grapes signify Christ’s blood spilled to free mankind of sin. INRI was the sign that Pilate had nailed to the cross standing for Iesus Hominem Rex Iudeorum “Jesus King of the Jews.” Crucifix Maker currently unknown Peru, 19th c. <image:title>Museum Blog - Saints and Symbols - Saint Joseph / San José</image:title>
<image:caption>Symbols: Flowering staff, baby Jesus, carpenter’s tools Why those symbols? The flowering staff refers to the legend in which Mary’s suitors were directed to bring a staff to the temple. The staff belonging to Joseph miraculously bloomed indicating that he was divinely chosen to be Mary’s husband. The baby Jesus in his arms shows his position as the earthly caretaker of the Holy Family and the carpenter’s tools reflect his trade. <image:title>Museum Blog - Saints and Symbols - Incense Burner / Sahumador</image:title>
<image:caption>Symbol: The Pomegranate Why this symbol? The pomegranate primarily symbolizes the Church because the many seeds (representing the faithful) are united in one fruit (Catholicism). It was given a political meaning for the Spanish because when Queen Isabela and King Ferdinand conquered the last stronghold of Muslims in Granada, they added the pomegranate (granada) to their coat of arms symbolizing the triumph of Christianity over Islam. <image:title>Museum Blog - Saints and Symbols - Saint Roch/San Roque</image:title>
<image:caption>Symbols: Dog, scallop shell, staff Why those symbols? Saint Roch was orphaned at 20 and subsequently gave his inheritance away to the poor. He embarked on a pilgrimage to Rome, thus he is garbed in the uniform of the time for pilgrims: a broad-brimmed hat, a scallop shell and a staff. On the journey he traveled from town to town healing plague victims with the sign of the cross. On his return he caught the plague, symbolized by the sore on his leg. He was brought back to health by a dog which brought him food scraps from its master’s table and an angel who nursed him. The scallop shell (cockleshell) became a symbol of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages, especially to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. As pilgrims traveled they could ask (of even the poorest people they met) for a serving of food in the shell they carried, without being a burden. San Roque Maker currently unknown Spain, 19th c. Wood, gesso, paint Bequest of Ann & Alan Vedder; 1990.052</image:caption>

<image:title>Museum Blog - Additions to the Collection: Spanish Market 2025! - Richard Gabriel</image:title>
<image:caption>If you saw the poster art for this year’s market, then you are familiar with the award winning work of Richard Gabriel. Richard’s work perfectly combines skill and creativity and he isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. Each year you can expect to find some surprises among his classic pieces and this year was no different. Catching many visitors’ eyes this year were his nicho pieces. We are absolutely thrilled to add this beautiful tinwork to our collection. Richard is not only an impressive artist, but has spent decades as a mentor and teacher passing on his knowledge of one of New Mexico’s unique heritage arts. Interested in learning tin? <image:title>Museum Blog - Additions to the Collection: Spanish Market 2025! - Marie Sena</image:title>
<image:caption>Marie Sena is a rare example of an artist who started in Youth Market and has continued on to be a fixture in market as an adult. Her unique style is somehow both classical and fresh. Marie has been featured in exhibits at the museum before, but until last year, we have not had her in our collection. In 2024, we were gifted a piece by Marie done in 1999 but a more recent piece by her has been high on our wish list. Marie is a talented tattoo artist as well as a Santera , to learn more, check out her instagram.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Another artist who has been was missing from our collection, Vince has been in a number of exhibits at the museum but this is the first piece of his to be added to the collection. This beautiful little St. Barbara shows off Vince’s work with traditional imagery, but most of us know Vince for his clever contemporary interpretations of the saints. <image:caption>This piece felt like a special find. The Barela family has long been known for their unique unpainted wood carving dating back generations. This piece was a collaboration done by Luis, his son Daniel, and Daniel’s two sons, Daniel and Santo. This piece is a wonderful visual story of how the heritage arts are passed down through the generations. Learn more about the family here.</image:caption>

Cleo’s work is award winning, but she is also a teacher for both children and adults, and has some impressive conservations projects under her belt. Learn more about Cleo here.</image:caption>
