Planned Giving
Donations from Your Estate
There are many flexible ways to support Spanish Colonial Arts Society through your estate plans. Click here for a printable pdf. Following is a list of options that can offer significant benefits to you and your loved ones:
1. Bequests (Gifts in Your Will or Trust)
A gift in your will is one of the simplest and most common ways to make a planned gift to support SCAS. You can designate a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder of your estate after certain provisions are met. If you already have a will, you can easily add a gift to SCAS through a simple amendment called a codicil, without having to rewrite your entire will. We recommend consulting your attorney to properly draft a codicil.
Here is some sample language you can use for an unrestricted bequest:
“I give, devise, and bequeath to Spanish Colonial Arts Society, located at 750 Camino Lejo, Santa Fe, NM, 87505, tax ID# 85-6011544, (dollar amount, percentage of estate, or specific property), to be used by the board of directors thereof in such manner as they deem most useful for the purposes of SCAS.
You may also designate your bequest to a specific program, endowment, or fund. For information on endowments or other restricted programs you can support, please email development@spanishcolonial.org.
2. IRA or Retirement Plan Beneficiary Designation
Naming SCAS as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), or other qualified retirement plan can be one of the most tax-efficient ways to give. These assets, if left to heirs, can be subject to significant income and estate taxes. By designating SCAS as a beneficiary, you can avoid these taxes while supporting our mission.
3. Life Insurance Policies
You can designate SCAS as a beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy, or transfer ownership of a paid-up policy directly to us. This can be a simple way to make a substantial future gift, often with immediate tax benefits
4. Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRT)
With a charitable remainder trust, you transfer assets to a trust, which then pays you or other beneficiaries’ income for a set term or for life. When the trust terminates, the remaining assets go to SCAS. This can provide income, diversify your assets, and offer significant tax benefits.
5. Charitable Lead Trusts (CLT)
With a charitable lead trust, the trust pays an annual amount to SCAS, with the assets ultimately passing on to another beneficiary at the end of the trust term. You can decide whether to receive an income tax deduction or pass savings on to your estate.
6. Gifts of Art
SCAS welcomes inquiries about possible art or other gifts to enhance our collections, either today or planned for the future. Because gifts of this nature require careful consideration, please contact us to ensure that SCAS can accept your gift.
