The Carson Phenomenon:
A Colcha Cottage Industry

June 5, 2026 - October 2026

Founded in 1908, the tiny town of Carson, New Mexico was largely settled by
Mormon families who had traveled from the mid-west and the east coast looking
for a new place to call home. It was an unlikely setting for an embroidery phenomenon, yet it might be one of the best story you ’ve never heard!

This exhibit will explore colcha in its origin and how it served women as a source of
income as well as an act of cultural preservation. The Carson community took the
road less traveled and produced vibrant pictorial pieces in a style all their own, a style that is practiced to this day.
