THE HEART OF THE MATTER (2026)

Oil on triptych panel 23 x 20 inches.

Make it stand out.

his triptych also comes from the Aces of the Tarot, in which a single hand holds out a cup or a coin. It is an allegory of tools and technology, and it reads from left to right like a story in three parts. On the left, a hand raises a golden chalice beneath a darkened host marked 01, a black sun of a Eucharist. It is the holy grail of tech communion, promised as a liberating force in human history and a panacea for every ill and every limit nature sets on us. On the right, a hand holds up a gold coin stamped with a bull and the signs of Bitcoin and the dollar. Money is ultimately the driving force behind any new technology.

Between them, a pair of hands lifts a Sacred Heart, crowned with thorns and burning, wrapped in a banner bearing Aristotle’s word: Η ΧΕΙΡ ΟΡΓΑΝΟΝ ΕΣΤΙΝ ΟΡΓΑΝΩΝ, hē cheir organon estin organōn, "the hand is the instrument of instruments." From organon we get organ, so these hands hold an organ in both senses, the tool and the living heart. Together with the sword and the torch of El Doble Filo, the chalice and the coin complete the four suits of the Tarot and the four elements, and the heart stands between them as the fifth, the quintessence the alchemists sought beyond earth, water, air, and fire. When it comes to any new technology, our own hands are the heart of the matter.

Closed, the doors show two mechanical hands raised in the gesture of blessing. Above them hang two robot camera eyes, one red and one blue, the same two colors as the berries on El Doble Filo, two possible futures as we adapt to this new tool and agent. Each eye sheds a tear while code falls like rain, the "tears in rain" of Blade Runner, where a dying machine mourns its memories, and the falling code of The Matrix. Over the eyes sit the signs of Mercury, planet of information, commerce, and deceit, and Uranus, planet of revolution, technology, and the new, whose glyph is built on the letter H for William Herschel, who discovered it. The Latin inscription below reads MANUS INSTRUMENTA MENS, hands, tools & the mind, an echo of Aristotle's line.

Human hands built this triptych. Human hands painted it. I have been pondering what makes my art stand apart from that of a machine. My five fingers point to the five senses and the corporeal world of real, lived experience. Perhaps the key is already in our hands.
